Some researchers may have offered substantial compensation to participants for their involvement in certain studies.
Recently, a group of UK researchers conducted a study involving over 30,000 participants who were smokers, focusing on their opinions about vaping.
The survey revealed that many smokers believe that vapes are more harmful than cigarettes, based on the responses of tens of thousands of participants.
Despite expert claims that vaping devices are much safer than tobacco, which is known to cause cancer and heart damage.
Researchers at a university in London, who surveyed nearly 30,000 smokers, concluded that there is an 'urgent need to address misconceptions about vaping'.
While vaping may seem beneficial from a medical standpoint, the long-term effects of e-cigarettes remain largely unknown.
Doctors may be concerned about the potential rise in lung disease, dental issues, and cancer in the coming decades among those who are addicted to vaping devices.
Vapes may have been sold for as little as RM25 and are considered by some health officials in the UK as a way to help smokers quit.
The study was conducted between 2014 and 2023, and the percentage of smokers who believed vaping was worse for their health doubled from 11 percent at the beginning of the study to the end.
During the summer, about 57 percent of smokers believed that e-cigarettes were as harmful as cigarettes.
It is stated that 'vaping may pose only a very small fraction of the risks of smoking'. However, a large number of people still believe that vaping is as harmful as, or even more harmful than, smoking, which may discourage smokers from switching to a less harmful product.
In recent years, perceptions have become 'worse than ever' due to the youth vaping epidemic, with the estimated percentage of 9 to 15-year-olds using vaping devices in the UK tripling. Despite the government restricting the age to 18.
“In Malaysia alone, the rate has increase significantly by 27%, but user are restricted by Malaysian Government at the age of 18”.
The Federal Government Gazette Excise Duties (Amendment) Order 2023 has implemented an excise tax at the rate of 40 sen per millilitre on e-cigarettes liquids or gels containing nicotine starting April 1, 2023.
A growing concern worldwide is the increasing number of young people getting involved in vaping and e-cigarette use.
The appealing flavors such as mango and mint, along with clever marketing strategies, have led to a rise in youth experimentation.
In the United Kingdom, the government has taken additional measures to crack down on e-cigarettes due to the alarming increase in rates, which critics have compared to highlighters because of their flashy appearance.
The ministry has made extra efforts to restrict the range of flavors and plain packaging that can be sold in stores.
Many people still perceive e-cigarettes to be equally harmful as traditional cigarettes. Despite ministerial efforts, vapes will only be allowed to be sold to a limited age group and with a limited range of flavors and plain packaging.
According to many doctors, smokers may be less likely to switch to vaping.
On the other hand, dual users who smoke and vape may continue smoking for a longer period.
Young vapers who have never regularly smoked may not associate any risks with transitioning to smoking.
Researchers and doctors involved in the project study believe that there is an urgent need to address misconceptions about vaping to ensure that people can make better decisions about the nicotine products they use.
When asked about long-term data on the risks associated with vaping, they stated: "Many people are concerned that we didn't know how harmful cigarettes were for a long time. They think the same might be true for e-cigarettes because it is a relatively new product. ‘But what a lot of people don't appreciate is how far the science has evolved since then.
Deborah Arnott, chief executive of the charity ASH, stated that there are millions of smokers who now believe vaping is more than or equally harmful as smoking, when the reverse is true, and e-cigarettes are the most effective and easily available quitting aid. She also mentioned that the tragedy is that as a result many millions of smokers may not try vaping and carry on smoking instead, continuing to put themselves at serious risk of cancers, respiratory and heart disease, followed by premature death. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is considering a new levy on the liquid in vapes, with higher levels for products with more nicotine. E-cigs allow people to inhale nicotine in a vapour — which is produced by heating a liquid, which typically contains propylene glycol, glycerine, flavourings, and other chemicals. Unlike traditional cigarettes, they do not contain tobacco, nor do they produce tar or carbon — two of the most dangerous elements.
